Lexia -
Screening of
Dyslexia in Urdu
made simple.

Lexia is a gamified tool designed to screen and assist in the assessment of dyslexia in primary school-going children. The app consists of 8 tests targeting different skills and provides indications of strengths and weaknesses of children with learning difficulties. This tool can easily be administered by parents and teachers and the results can be used by pscyhologists to formally assess children.

We do our research.

Lexia was designed in collaboration with a psychologist and a PhD scholar who after extensive research, designed a manual test battery consisting of 8 tests to screen children with dyslexia. This test battery has been tried and tested on over 200 Urdu-speaking participants and the realibility was reported to be high.

The tests.

The tests assess whether or not children are able to:

– Recognize letters and words
– Differentiate between words with letter migrations
– Read nonsense words
– Read words with syllables missing and more!

Research Objective.

Our research in the area of screening Dyslexia is primarily focused on designing a test battery to assist in the assessment of dyslexia in Urdu. Our specific research questions are:
01
Will a digital screening tool for dyslexia in Urdu be acceptable and encouraged among psychologists?

02
Will the digital screening tool be engaging for students?

03
Will this tool be reliable in screening and extracting the strengths and weaknesses of children with Dyslexia in Urdu?

Studies Conducted.

To answer our research questions, we conducted 2 studies to test our designed product (Lexia) with participants who were representative of our target market: primary and middle school-going children and clinical psychologists who deal with Dyslexic children.
Study 1
We evaluated our serious game based on a within-subject study consisting of a total of 24 children (all male) 5-12 years of age belonging to a private school in Lahore.
Study 2
We surveyed a total of 10 clinical psychologists and psychotherapists using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to evaluate the usability and acceptability of the game within the community.

Major Findings.

Answer to RQ 1
Lexia scored high on the engagement scale after receiving feedback from children. All children found it to be engaging.

Answer to RQ 2
Clinical psychologists considered the tool to be highly useful and easy to use.

Answer to RQ 3
Our tool’s accuracy was reported to be as high as 92% as 22 out of 24 students were screened accurately.

We also received helpful feedback from our participants to automate a few features in order to save time and ensure standardization. We elaborate on this finding in the future work section.

Future Work.

With the advancement of technology, we aim to constantly improve our products after receiving feedback from our users. We aim to focus on the following in the future:
01
Utilizing speech recognition engines in Urdu to automate grading of tests.

02
Incorporate a deeper analysis of screening results via a Dashboard, aiding psychologists in assessing children with Dyslexia and in designing a therapeutic program tailored to their needs.
