Research Objective.

We wanted to design the first of its kind, stand-alone gamified remediation tool for dyslexia in Urdu. Our research questions were:
01
What are some challenges presented by the Urdu script that promote the manifestation of dyslexia?

02
How can an intervention plan be designed for dyslexia in Urdu?

03
Will children with dyslexia be able to improve their language skills using a gamified tool?

Dyslexia Remediation Research Conducted

Research Conducted.

We conducted in-depth desk research, exploring and studying historically verified techniques for helping children with Dyslexia. Furthermore, we collaborated with:
Clinical Psychologists

We closely worked with clinical psychologists and speech therapists who directly deal with Dyslexic children in Pakistan in English. They outlined their experience as remedial therapists and the standardized techniques they use to successfully help children learn.

Urdu Language Experts

We interviewed two Urdu language experts and researchers to understand current practices in teaching Urdu to children.

We combined our findings to understand how Urdu language manifests itself in Dyslexia and answered RQ 1.

Major Findings.

Our desk research, competitor analysis and interview sessions with the child psychologist and Urdu language expert helped us design a lesson/activity plan for Rawaan and answer RQ2. Insights we gained from our research were:
01
Incorporate Orton Gillingham techniques which rely on sequential, structured and multi-sensory approach to language learning.

02
Keeping children engaged and motivation is a challenge we need to be ready to take. Children with Dyslexia have low self-esteem and motivation to learn.

03
Design a flexible architecture that adapts to the child’s level and provides language-specific challenges.

Our solution.

Insights we had gained from our research were translated into a contextual, engaging Urdu learning application specifically designed for children with Dyslexia in Pakistan.

Orton Gillingham Approach
Our approach is based on Orton Gillingham and other historically validated approaches known to help children with Dyslexia. We utilize multisensory learning (the use of multiple senses to learn a language), structured and sequential lessons and activities, and explicit teaching with specific learning outcomes.
Adaptive Learning
Rawaan adapts to the child’s level and provides easier or harder challenges based on real-time performance. Adaptive learning has proven to be effective in research since it is designed to be challenging enough for the child to refrain from losing motivation and provides a good learning experience at the same time.
Gamification
Gamification holds a person’s attention over an extended period of time. Users lose interest in applications, especially if they are meant to be used regularly for a long time. To combat this, we have designed a set of engaging adventure games for children to play, earn coins and maintain a score.
Designed in Local Context
While designing the application for Urdu-speaking individuals, we kept the context into view. This game is primarily designed for children in Pakistan. We made several design decisions based on this, including designing the companion character to be a Markhor, taking a trip to Murree, playing cricket and a lot more!
